THE
LAST ESCAPE OF The Pageant Committee, an independent corporation, holds a festival and open-air drama on the first full weekend in August. The tradition began in the 1930's and consisted simply of a play that was acted out in the middle of the dirt road that ran through Lincoln. After World War II, the play was resumed. The three day event now is centered on three showings of the drama, held on Friday and Saturday evenings after dark and on Sunday afternoon, featuring folks from around Lincoln County in all the starring and supporting roles. But in addition, the weekend is now an ongoing festival full of historic activities, music, lectures, a variety of food, and vendors' booths. The weekend culminates in a parade on Sunday morning. On Christmas Eve, the Pageant Committee works hard to set up a breath-taking luminario display, with candles lining both sides of the street for over a mile through Lincoln. For more information about the pageant, to obtain space for a booth or to participate in the Sunday parade, contact Cherie Hobbs at 575.653.4680. |
